Can I Take Mushroom Coffee for Energy and Focus Instead of Regular Coffee?
Share
More people are starting to think about what they actually want from their morning coffee.
For some, it's the caffeine. For others, it's the routine. And for plenty of people, it's simply having something familiar to start the day with.
Mushroom coffee doesn't necessarily change that.
It's still coffee, but functional mushrooms such as Lion's Mane and Cordyceps can be included alongside it.
So, can mushroom coffee replace regular coffee?
It can, depending on what you're looking for.
But it's worth understanding what's actually in the cup first.
Mushroom coffee isn't automatically caffeine-free or particularly low in caffeine. And adding functional mushrooms doesn't turn coffee into a stronger or "better" version of itself.
Caffeine, Lion's Mane and Cordyceps are different ingredients with different roles.
That's really the useful place to start.
Key Takeaways
-
Mushroom coffee combines coffee with functional mushroom extracts, although the formulation can vary quite a lot between products.
-
Caffeine is mainly associated with alertness, while Cordyceps is more commonly discussed around vitality, endurance and cellular energy.
-
Lion's Mane is being researched in relation to cognition, including areas such as focus and mental clarity.
-
Mushroom coffee isn't automatically low in caffeine. Some products contain less caffeine than regular coffee, while others may contain a similar amount or be decaffeinated.
-
Whether mushroom coffee can replace your normal coffee largely depends on what you're actually looking for from your coffee.
Can I Take Mushroom Coffee for Energy?
You can, but it helps to separate two different ideas of energy.
Coffee contains caffeine.
Caffeine is a stimulant, so the effect most people recognise is feeling more awake and alert.
Cordyceps is a different conversation.
Rather than thinking about it in the same way as caffeine, it's more useful to look at Cordyceps in relation to vitality, endurance and cellular energy.
Part of that interest comes back to ATP, or adenosine triphosphate.
ATP is essentially the molecule our cells use to store and transfer energy. It's involved in everything from muscle contraction to many of the basic processes our cells need to function.
Cordyceps also contains naturally occurring compounds including adenosine and cordycepin, which is one reason researchers continue to explore its relationship with energy and endurance.
There is some human research around Cordyceps too.
One placebo-controlled study involving 37 healthy older adults looked at six weeks of supplementation with a Cordyceps sinensis fermentation product. Researchers reported improvements in measures including maximal oxygen uptake and anaerobic threshold compared with placebo.
That's interesting. But the study looked at exercise performance. It didn't look at mushroom coffee or whether somebody felt more energetic sitting at their desk.
So when caffeine and Cordyceps appear in the same cup, we wouldn't treat them as two versions of the same thing.
If you drink coffee and feel more alert, that's largely the caffeine doing what caffeine does.
Can I Take Mushroom Coffee for Focus?
This is where Lion's Mane tends to come into the conversation.
Lion's Mane is increasingly being researched in relation to cognition, including areas such as focus and processing mental clarity.
A small 2023 randomised, double-blind pilot study looked at 41 healthy adults aged 18 to 45. After a single 1.8g dose of Lion's Mane, participants performed significantly quicker on a Stroop task 60 minutes later.
It's an interesting result, but it was a small study and the same effect wasn't seen across every measure.
That's quite different from saying Lion's Mane will keep somebody focused throughout an entire working day.
Sleep, stress, distractions and how long you've been concentrating can all affect focus too.
That's not really how we think about functional mushrooms.
Caffeine provides the familiar stimulant effect associated with coffee. Lion's Mane is being explored in a different way, around cognition and particular aspects of cognitive performance.
So we'd stick to what has actually been studied rather than turning the wider cognition conversation into a promise of instant concentration.
What Is Mushroom Coffee?
Mushroom coffee is essentially coffee with functional mushroom extracts included in the formulation.
Other products contain several mushrooms, botanicals, vitamins or other functional ingredients as well.
That's why two products labelled "mushroom coffee" can actually be quite different.

The mushroom is part of the formula, but it isn't always the whole formula.
So look beyond "mushroom coffee" on the front.
What's actually in it tells you far more.
Does Mushroom Coffee Taste Like Mushrooms?
Not necessarily. The finished taste depends on the coffee, the mushroom extracts and everything else included in the formulation.
Coffee can still be the dominant flavour, so mushroom coffee doesn't necessarily taste anything like the mushrooms you'd cook with.
Some formulations may have slightly earthier notes depending on what's included, but there isn't one flavour that applies to every mushroom coffee.
And you don't necessarily need to change how you drink it.
If you normally take your coffee with milk or a little sweetener, mushroom coffee can generally fit into much the same routine.
What Is the Best Functional Mushroom Coffee?
There isn't one mushroom coffee that's going to be best for everybody.
Start with what you actually want from it.
-
Do you still want caffeine?
-
Would you rather have less?
-
Are you specifically interested in Lion's Mane, Cordyceps or both?
-
How much of each mushroom is actually included?
-
And what else is in the formulation?
Our Focus & Energy Coffee combines Arabica coffee with Lion's Mane and Cordyceps as part of a wider formulation that also includes botanicals, MCT oil, vitamin D2 and vitamin B12.
It provides 2,000mg equivalent Lion's Mane extract and 1,000mg equivalent Cordyceps extract per serving. It also contains 75mg of caffeine per serving, which we list as 20% less than a standard coffee.
That still makes it a caffeinated drink, which is why the amount per serving is worth checking when comparing products.
How Does Mushroom Coffee Compare With Regular Coffee?
This really comes back to what you want from your coffee.

One isn't automatically better than the other.
So it really comes back to what you're trying to change about your coffee.
If you still want caffeine, a caffeinated mushroom coffee may fit naturally into the same routine. If you want less, check the amount per serving. And if you're trying to avoid caffeine altogether, look specifically for a decaf formulation.
Don't use the word "mushroom" as a guide to caffeine content.
The useful question isn't whether mushroom coffee is better than regular coffee. It's what you're actually looking for from your coffee.

Building Mushroom Coffee Into Your Routine
You don't need to make this complicated.
If you already drink coffee and you're interested in Lion's Mane or Cordyceps, mushroom coffee is one way of bringing those things into something you're already doing.
If you'd rather take individual mushrooms separately, that's another option.
The format largely comes down to what you'll actually use consistently.
And it's worth keeping the coffee itself in perspective.
If you're tired because you're not sleeping enough, changing what's in your morning cup doesn't solve the reason you're tired.
The same applies to hydration, nutrition, movement and the other things that can affect energy and concentration.
Mushroom coffee can be part of the routine.
It doesn't need to carry the whole thing.
FAQs
Does Mushroom Coffee Have Less Caffeine Than Regular Coffee?
Sometimes, but not automatically. Caffeine content varies between mushroom coffees, with caffeinated, lower-caffeine and decaf formulations available. Check the amount stated for the particular product rather than assuming mushroom coffee always contains less caffeine.
Does Mushroom Coffee Cause Jitters?
That largely comes back to caffeine and how you personally respond to it. A mushroom coffee that contains caffeine is still a caffeinated drink. Adding Lion's Mane or Cordyceps doesn't automatically remove the effects of caffeine.
Can I Drink Mushroom Coffee and Regular Coffee on the Same Day?
You can have different types of coffee during the same day, but the useful thing to keep an eye on is your overall caffeine intake. Mushroom coffee can still contain caffeine, so it shouldn't automatically be treated as separate from the other coffee, tea or caffeinated drinks you're having. Check the caffeine content of the particular products you're using and consider how caffeine affects you personally.
Is Decaf Mushroom Coffee Still Useful Without Caffeine?
Decaf changes the caffeine part of the conversation, but it doesn't necessarily remove the functional mushrooms. So if you're more interested in the mushrooms than the stimulant effect of coffee, a decaf formulation may make sense. The important thing is to check what's actually in the product, because different formulations can contain different mushrooms and supporting ingredients.
How Does Mushroom Coffee Compare With Matcha for Focus?
They're quite different drinks. Matcha naturally contains caffeine and L-theanine, while mushroom coffee may combine caffeine with functional mushrooms such as Lion's Mane. There isn't enough evidence to say one is simply "better" for focus than the other. It makes more sense to look at the caffeine content, the wider formulation and which drink fits your routine.
Can I Drink Mushroom Coffee Every Day?
Mushroom coffee can be designed as part of a regular routine, but follow the serving guidance for the particular product you're using. If it contains caffeine, keep your overall intake in mind too, particularly if you're also drinking tea, coffee or other caffeinated drinks during the day.
